Sciatica refers to pain that radiates from the lower back down the legs as a result of compression on the sciatic nerve. Up to 40% of the general population may experience sciatica in their lifetime. It is more common in people over the age of 40 years.

Arthritis and bone spurs are the most common causes of sciatica in older adults. Disk herniation and sudden pressure on the disks that cushion the vertebrae of the lower spine may also cause sciatic pain.
