What are hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids, or piles, are swollen, enlarged veins around the anus or rectum. Internal hemorrhoids occur in the lining of the anus and lower rectum, while external hemorrhoids form under the skin around the anus. Possible symptoms include bleeding, itchiness, soreness, and a hard or tender lump near the anus.

What causes hemorrhoids?

Possible causes of hemorrhoids include straining during bowel movements, having chronic diarrhea or constipation, or sitting on the toilet for extended periods.
