Here are answers to some frequently asked questions about Xhance.

How does Xhance compare with Flonase?

Xhance and Flonase are both nasal sprays that contain the same active drug, fluticasone propionate. However, there are several differences between these medications.

For example, Xhance contains a different strength of fluticasone propionate than Flonase and is used in a different way. With Flonase nasal spray, you sniff the drug into your nasal passages. But Xhance nasal spray has a mouthpiece that you use to blow the drug through a nosepiece into your nasal passages. This may allow more of the medication to reach deep into your nasal passages and less may drip down the back of your throat.

Xhance is used to treat chronic (ongoing) rhinosinusitis with or without nasal polyps. It’s only available with a prescription.

Flonase allergy relief is an over-the-counter nasal spray used to treat nasal allergies, such as hay fever. A prescription version of Flonase nasal spray was previously available for treating nasal inflammation not caused by allergies. But this product has been discontinued by the manufacturer.

If you have more questions about Xhance versus Flonase, talk with your doctor or pharmacist. They can recommend whether one of these drugs is more suitable for you.

How does Xhance work?

Xhance is used to treat chronic rhinosinusitis with or without nasal polyps. With chronic rhinosinusitis, you have ongoing inflammation (swelling) in your nasal passages and sinuses. The inflammation can cause polyps, which are small, noncancerous growths in the lining of your nasal passages and sinuses. These conditions can cause symptoms such as nasal and facial pain, stuffy or runny nose, and a reduced sense of smell.

Xhance contains the active drug fluticasone propionate, which is a type of drug called a corticosteroid. It works by reducing the inflammation in your nasal passages and sinuses. It also helps shrink nasal polyps. This helps relieve the pain, congestion, and other symptoms associated with these conditions.

Talk with your doctor to learn more about how Xhance works.

The following information describes Xhance dosages that are commonly used or recommended. However, be sure to take the dosage your doctor prescribes for you. Your doctor will determine the best dosage to fit your needs.

Drug form and strength

Xhance comes as a nasal spray. Each spray delivers 93 micrograms (mcg) of the active drug fluticasone propionate.

Only one strength of Xhance is available.

Dosage for chronic rhinosinusitis with or without nasal polyps

The recommended dosage of Xhance is 186 mcg (one spray in each nostril) or 372 mcg (two sprays in each nostril) twice daily.

The maximum recommended dosage is two sprays in each nostril twice daily.

How to use

Xhance nasal spray is used in a different way than traditional nasal sprays. The Xhance nasal spray device has a mouthpiece that you use to blow the medication through a nosepiece into your nasal passages.

To take a dose, you insert the nosepiece into one nostril so that it makes a tight seal with your nostril. You then place the flexible mouthpiece in your mouth. You blow into the mouthpiece while pushing the bottle up to activate the dose. Your breath carries the dose deep into your nasal passages. You should not sniff or breath in or out through your nose while you are taking a dose.

Your doctor or pharmacist can show you how to use Xhance nasal spray correctly. For more details, you can view the instructions provided with the nasal spray. The manufacturer’s website also has a step-by-step instruction video.

About using Xhance

Below you’ll find information about key dosage issues.

  • When to use: You should use Xhance twice per day, morning and evening. Using the medication around the same time of day helps keep a steady level of the drug in your body. This helps Xhance work effectively.
  • If you miss a dose: If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember that day. If you don’t remember until the following day, skip the missed dose. Do not take more than your prescribed dose each day.
  • Length of treatment: Xhance is meant to be used as a long-term treatment. If you and your doctor determine that Xhance is safe and effective for you, you’ll likely use it long term.
  • Length of time to work: How long Xhance takes to work can vary between people. For some people, the drug may start to relieve symptoms after 2 weeks, but for others, it may take longer than this. Be sure to keep using Xhance regularly, even if your symptoms don’t improve at first.

Overdose

Do not use more Xhance than your doctor recommends. For some drugs, doing so may lead to unwanted side effects or overdose.
