Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund To Host Informational Sessions On July 11 And 14

The Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund (MSCRF) will hold two informational sessions to provide insight on ways for applicants to increase their chances of receiving state-supported stem cell research funding. The event will include an overview of the application process, various speakers, a question and answer session and networking.
Speakers will include:
-- Dan Gincel, Ph.D., director of the MSCRF - Will discuss funding opportunities for stem cell research in Maryland.
-- Donna L. Vogel, M.D., Ph.D., director of the professional development office at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine - Will present "Grantcraft," highlights in effective grant writing.
-- Mark L. Weiss, Ph.D., professor of neuroscience at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Kansas State University, and a member of the MSCRF Scientific Peer Review Committee - Will discuss the review criteria used by the Committee.
--Debra JH Mathews, Ph.D., MA, assistant director for science programs at the Berman Institute of Bioethics at Johns Hopkins University - Will discuss the ethical implications in stem cell research.
Established as an independent unit within the Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO), the Maryland Stem Cell Research Commission (Commission) has set up criteria, standards and requirements to administer the MSCRF. The MSCRF was established to promote state-funded stem cell research. With a $19 million budget for FY 2009, the MSCRF will support grants to public and private entities in the state.
