ORLANDO, FL (UroToday.com) - In this interesting study, Dr. Janet Colli and colleagues evaluated whether prostate cancer (CaP) death rates correlated with PSA screening and with the number of urologists per unit of population.
In an attempt to account for access to care and socioeconomic status, investigators performed a multivariate analysis controlling for median family income, socioeconomic status, degree of urbanization, and health insurance status. Death rates from prostate cancer correlated with both PSA screening (R = -0.2) and urologist population density (R= -1.5).
Undergoing prostate cancer screening and having access to urologic care had a beneficial impact on CaP mortality rates in this study.
Presented by Janet L Colli, MD, Christopher Stands, MD, Ben Martin, MD, and Christopher Amling, MD, at the Annual Meeting of the American Urological Association (AUA) - May 17 - 22, 2008. Orange County Convention Center - Orlando, Florida, USA.
