The antiabortion groups Christian Defense Coalition and Survivors of the Abortion Holocaust on Wednesday announced their plans to protest the Democratic National Convention in Denver from Aug. 25-28, the Denver Rocky Mountain News reports.

The groups plan to bring as many as 1,000 protesters to Denver and maintain a presence outside the hotel of presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) (Vaughan, Denver Rocky Mountain News, 6/18). The groups also plan to encircle the Pepsi Center, where the convention is being held. They plan to leave roses on the sidewalk outside the arena and kneel and pray for an end to abortions. Other rallies and demonstrations are planned around downtown Denver.

Patrick Mahoney of the Christian Defense Coalition criticized Obama for opposing a ban on so-called "partial-birth abortion," among other criticisms. Obama would be the "most radical president ever, when it comes to abortion," Mahoney said, adding, "We will expose Sen. Obama as the abortion president." Representatives from Obama's Colorado press office did not immediately return a request for comment, the AP/Washington Examiner reports (Moreno, AP/Washington Examiner, 6/18).

Mahoney met with Denver City Attorney David Fine about concerns over possible clashes between the protesters and police. Fine said that he and Mahoney discussed the antiabortion groups' plans and that the city "intend[s] to look into the issues" raised by Mahoney (Denver Rocky Mountain News, 6/18).
